In this lesson pupils will learn about road safety issues in their local area. They will explore local statistics and consider a range of awareness resources relating to road safety.

  • I know how to travel independently (only with permission) to and from school as a pedestrian, cyclist or on public or school transport.
  • I know the risks – and the effect of risky behaviour – on the road and can develop strategies to cope with dangerous situations caused by others.

In this lesson pupils will learn road safety skills for when they are old enough to travel without an adult.

They will learn to identify how one route may be safer than another, and how to be a considerate traveller.

There is a focus on how to cross the road safely, identifying places to cross and areas to avoid.

  • 2. I know how to plan a safer journey to school.

In this lesson pupils will learn about the “Stop, Look, Listen, Think ” sequence and discuss how it can be applied in a range of settings.

They will discuss how distractions such as mobile phones and pressure from peers may cause dangerous situations.

Students will understand  the benefits of sustainable travel, alongside the ways of how to do so safely. Many students will have thought about how they can improve their travel, to make it more sustainable to benefitt them, their families and their local communities.

Students will also work on school campaigns to encourage others to make more sustainable choices about travelling to and from school.
